Where To Watch Cabaret

Set in 1931 Berlin, Cabaret follows the magnetic and unpredictable Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli), the headline performer at the decadent Kit Kat Klub. Her life changes when she meets Brian Roberts (Michael York), a reserved British academic who has arrived in Berlin to study German. Their complicated relationship becomes even more tangled when wealthy playboy Maximilian von Heune (Helmut Griem) enters their lives. While Sally and Brian attempt to navigate romance, ambition, sexuality and personal freedom, the atmosphere outside the nightclub becomes increasingly dangerous as the Nazi Party gains political power. The film deliberately contrasts the glittering performances of the Kit Kat Klub with the growing darkness of German society. At the center is Joel Grey's Master of Ceremonies, whose unsettling performances turn the nightclub into a symbolic reflection of a society trying to entertain itself while political extremism closes in.

More details about Cabaret and where you can watch

Cabaret was one of the major triumphs of the 45th Academy Awards, winning 8 Oscars, including Best Director for Bob Fosse, Best Actress for Liza Minnelli and Best Supporting Actor for Joel Grey.

The movie is especially famous because it doesn’t treat its musical numbers simply as interruptions to the story. Many performances at the Kit Kat Klub work as ironic reflections of what is happening outside, creating a disturbing contrast between entertainment and the political collapse of the Weimar Republic.

The film was also shot in West Berlin, giving the production an unusually strong sense of place.

Did You Know

Cabaret has a surprisingly deep literary history. The 1972 movie was adapted from the stage musical by Joe Masteroff, which itself was inspired by John Van Druten’s play I Am a Camera. That play was based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin. In other words, the famous film ultimately traces its origins back to Isherwood’s semi-autobiographical writing about Berlin in the years before World War II.
