Shin Godzilla reimagines Japan's legendary kaiju as a terrifying, constantly evolving disaster. When an unexplained creature emerges from Tokyo Bay, government officials initially struggle to understand whether they are dealing with a natural disaster, an industrial accident, or something far more dangerous. As the creature reaches land and rapidly evolves into Godzilla, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Rando Yaguchi (Hiroki Hasegawa) works with scientists, military officials and an unconventional team of experts to find a way to stop it. Hideki Akasaka (Yutaka Takenouchi) assists Yaguchi, while American special envoy Kayoko Ann Patterson (Satomi Ishihara) becomes an important link between Japan and the United States. The movie combines giant-monster spectacle with political satire, disaster-film tension and commentary on bureaucracy and crisis management.

One of the most unusual things about Shin Godzilla is that Godzilla isn’t simply a giant monster getting stronger through conventional means—he evolves physically throughout the film. The movie also deliberately focuses on government meetings, paperwork, scientific analysis and bureaucratic decision-making, making the human response almost as important as the monster itself. Hideaki Anno, best known for Neon Genesis Evangelion, brought a distinctive disaster-film sensibility to the project, while Shinji Higuchi handled much of the creature and visual direction.
