The Ugly Stepsister is a dark reimagining of Cinderella inspired by the Brothers Grimm’s “Aschenputtel.” Writer-director Emilie Blichfeldt mixed fairy-tale elements with body horror to explore society’s obsession with beauty. The film was influenced by filmmakers such as David Cronenberg, and much of it was filmed in historic locations across Poland. It premiered at Sundance 2025 in the Midnight section and later screened at the Berlin International Film Festival. One of its most unusual ideas comes from the original Grimm tale, where the stepsisters mutilate their feet to fit Cinderella’s slipper.

The Ugly Stepsister turns the familiar Cinderella formula upside down by making the supposedly “ugly” stepsister the heroine. Rather than simply retelling the fairy tale, Emilie Blichfeldt uses the darker tradition of the Brothers Grimm’s “Aschenputtel” as a foundation and combines it with extreme body horror.
