Ripley follows Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott), a financially struggling con artist living in 1960s New York whose talent for deception suddenly gives him access to a world of wealth, art and privilege. A wealthy industrialist, Herbert Greenleaf (Kenneth Lonergan), hires Tom to travel to Italy and persuade his rebellious son Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) to return home. Tom soon becomes fascinated by Dickie's glamorous lifestyle, his artistic interests and his relationship with Marge Sherwood (Dakota Fanning). What begins as a simple assignment gradually becomes an elaborate web of lies, identity theft, manipulation and murder. More details about The Talented Mr. Ripley and where you can watch

One of the most distinctive things about the series is that it was deliberately filmed in black and white. Creator Steven Zaillian wanted to avoid presenting Italy as simply a beautiful, colorful postcard and instead emphasize the darker, suspenseful and noir-like atmosphere of Highsmith’s story. The cinematography was created by Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit, and the production carefully recreated the look of the early 1960s.

The production also filmed across more than 200 locations in Italy and New York, including places such as Atrani, Rome, Naples, Palermo and Venice. Some real locations were adapted to represent fictional places from the story.

Did You Know

Ripley is based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, but the Netflix adaptation takes a much slower and more visually detailed approach than many previous versions of the story. Highsmith’s Tom Ripley became one of crime fiction’s most famous antiheroes, and the character later appeared in several other Ripley novels.
