One of the film’s standout elements is its attempt to make the criminals feel like a trained tactical unit rather than ordinary bank robbers. Ray Merrimen’s crew consists largely of men with military backgrounds, which explains their disciplined approach to planning, weapons and escape tactics. The film also uses Los Angeles itself as an important part of the story, presenting the city as a massive battlefield between law enforcement and professional criminals.
Interestingly, Den of Thieves was written and directed by Christian Gudegast, who had been developing the project for years before it reached the screen. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Paul Scheuring, best known as the creator of Prison Break.

Den of Thieves deliberately pays homage to the classic 1995 crime thriller Heat, particularly through its cat-and-mouse relationship between a determined police officer and a highly professional criminal. However, rather than simply copying Heat, the movie builds its own military-style robbery world around former soldiers and tactical planning.
