The film is based on E. L. James’ bestselling 2011 novel Fifty Shades of Grey and became the first cinematic entry in a trilogy that continued with Fifty Shades Darker (2017) and Fifty Shades Freed (2018). The film adaptation was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, with the screenplay written by Kelly Marcel and E. L. James serving as one of the producers.
One particularly interesting detail is the enormous popularity of the source material before the movie was released. Universal’s official trailer description noted that the Fifty Shades books had already been translated into more than 50 languages and sold over 90 million copies at the time of the film’s promotion.
The movie also became notable for its soundtrack. One of its best-known musical moments was Beyoncé’s version of “Crazy in Love,” which was reworked specifically for the film and helped give the movie’s marketing campaign a distinctive musical identity.
