Tusk was inspired by an unusual real-life advertisement that filmmaker Kevin Smith discovered while working on his podcast, SModcast. The advertisement was from a man offering free accommodation in exchange for someone dressing up as a walrus. Smith and his co-host Scott Mosier discussed the bizarre idea on their podcast, which eventually inspired the movie. Interestingly, Johnny Depp appears almost unrecognizable as the French-Canadian detective Guy LaPointe. The film was also the beginning of Kevin Smith’s planned True North trilogy, which continued with Yoga Hosers (2016). Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release, Tusk developed a following among fans of unusual body-horror movies.
