One of the most interesting aspects of Season 1 is that the series was adapted directly from Laura Dave’s bestselling novel, with Dave herself co-creating and adapting the television version alongside Academy Award-winning writer Josh Singer. The book was published in 2021 and became a #1 New York Times bestseller. Apple says it remained on the bestseller list for more than a year and had sold more than 2 million copies in the United States by early 2023.

Another unusual detail is the show’s directing team: the first season was guided by an all-female lineup of directors, including Olivia Newman, Deniz Gamze Ergüven, Daisy von Scherler Mayer and Lila Neugebauer.

The story also deliberately makes the emotional relationship between Hannah and Bailey just as important as the central mystery.
