In Planet of the Apes Season 1, astronauts Colonel Alan Virdon (Ron Harper) and Major Peter Burke (James Naughton) crash-land on a future version of Earth where intelligent apes have become the dominant civilization and humans are treated as an inferior species. Their only major ally is Galen (Roddy McDowall), a sympathetic chimpanzee who begins questioning the beliefs of his society. Pursued by the powerful gorilla security chief Urko (Mark Lenard), the three fugitives travel through a dangerous world while searching for a way back to their own time. Along the journey, they encounter gladiatorial arenas, hidden scientific knowledge, oppressed humans, ape communities and remnants of the civilization that once existed on Earth.

One of the most interesting aspects of the 1974 series is that it continued the Planet of the Apes concept as a weekly adventure rather than simply recreating the original movie. The series was based on the earlier films, which themselves originated from Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel La Planète des singes. Roddy McDowall also returned to the franchise, this time playing the new character Galen, after previously portraying Cornelius in the films. The production also required extensive ape makeup, with contemporary promotional material stating that applying the makeup appliances could take roughly three and a half to four hours.
