More details about The Waterfront and where you can watch

The Waterfront is inspired by creator Kevin Williamson’s real family history. His father was a North Carolina fisherman who became involved in a marijuana-smuggling operation, providing inspiration for the show’s themes of family loyalty, crime, and financial desperation.

Although the fictional town of Havenport is not real, the series was filmed in coastal locations around Wilmington and Southport, North Carolina, giving it an authentic waterfront atmosphere.

Interestingly, Williamson also explored aspects of his father’s criminal history in Dawson’s Creek, connecting his personal experiences to two very different television dramas.

The story’s fishing-industry crisis connects to Williamson’s recollection of the pressures facing North Carolina fishing businesses during his youth. This gives the crime drama a foundation in economic anxiety rather than making it solely about criminal ambition.
