One of the most interesting aspects of the project is that the idea predates the actual FOX Nation series by decades. Scorsese had been fascinated by saints since childhood and had considered developing a project about them long before the series was eventually made. According to IMDb’s trivia, an earlier version was intended for Italy’s RAI, but that project fell apart; Scorsese later channelled his interest in spirituality into films including The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun and Silence before the saints project was revived.

The series also represents an unusual direction for Scorsese. The filmmaker is famous for stories about crime, violence, guilt and morally conflicted characters, yet The Saints turns his attention toward people who faced those same human struggles through religious conviction, sacrifice and redemption.
