After the events of Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul, Riko, Reg and Nanachi finally reach the Sixth Layer, a region from which very few explorers ever return. Their destination is the legendary Golden City, but instead they discover a strange settlement known as Ilblu, the Village of the Hollows. The village is inhabited by beings who have been transformed by the Abyss and live according to a mysterious system of value. As Riko explores the village, Reg searches for answers about his forgotten past, while Nanachi becomes entangled in a devastating situation involving Belaf and the mysterious Hollow known as Faputa. At the same time, the season reveals the tragic history of the Ganja squad, a group of explorers who reached the Sixth Layer long before Riko and Reg. Their story explains how the village came into existence and introduces one of the most important mysteries in the entire Made in Abyss world.
