Riko is the daughter of the legendary White Whistle Cave Raider Lyza the Annihilator, who disappeared while exploring the deepest parts of the Abyss. Riko dreams of following in her mother's footsteps. Her life changes when she discovers Reg, a mysterious robot-like boy with extraordinary mechanical abilities and no memory of his past. Believing that Reg may have originated from the Abyss's deepest levels, Riko decides to descend with him. Their journey takes them through increasingly dangerous layers of the Abyss. Along the way they encounter powerful creatures, strange relics, experienced Cave Raiders and the terrifying Curse of the Abyss. The deeper they go, the more difficult it becomes to return to the surface.

One of the most interesting aspects of Made in Abyss is the contrast between its cute character designs and extremely dark subject matter. Riko and Reg look like characters from a children’s fantasy adventure, while the Abyss itself operates according to brutal rules involving injury, survival, biological transformation and the consequences of ascending after descending too deeply. This contrast is one of the series’ defining stylistic features.
