In Pixels, NASA sends a time capsule containing video footage of Earth’s culture into space, including classic arcade games. Years later, aliens interpret these games as hostile challenges and attack Earth using pixelated versions of the games. Former arcade champion Sam Brenner, now a technician, is recruited along with other gamers to defend the planet. As giant versions of Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Donkey Kong wreak havoc, the team must use their gaming expertise to defeat each level of attack. Along the way, humor, friendships, and personal growth emerge. The fate of humanity depends on their ability to outplay the aliens in real-life versions of classic arcade challenges.
