After being forced out of the Marines, Major Benson Payne finds himself without purpose in civilian life. He soon accepts a job as the commandant of a struggling military academy, where he is put in charge of an undisciplined group of young cadets. Using extreme training methods, Payne initially terrifies the children, but slowly learns to adapt his leadership style. As the cadets begin to bond and grow more confident, Payne also undergoes personal change, especially after forming a romantic connection with a school psychologist.
