The story centers on Tomoya Okazaki, a cynical high school student with a troubled past and little interest in life until he befriends Nagisa Furukawa, a kind girl repeating her final year. Together they work to revive their school’s drama club, and through this journey, Tomoya confronts his inner pain and begins to find hope again. Although the Clannad movie was released before the highly acclaimed Clannad TV series, it was produced by a different animation studio (Toei Animation) not the same Kyoto Animation that later made the beloved TV adaptation. This caused many fans to see the movie and the series as entirely separate interpretations of the same story, with very different tones and levels of emotional impact, surprising many viewers who expected the same studio work.
