Divergent unfolds in a dystopian version of Chicago, where society is rigidly split into five factions Abnegation, Dauntless, Erudite, Candor and Amity each representing a virtue. Upon turning sixteen, citizens take an aptitude test determining their ideal faction. Beatrice “Tris” Prior is shocked when her test reveals she is Divergent, meaning she fits into multiple factions and cannot be controlled by the faction system. To protect herself, Tris hides the truth and chooses to join Dauntless, where she meets her instructor Tobias “Four” Eaton. Through harsh physical training and psychological tests, Tris learns to face her fears and discovers a plot by the ruthless Erudite faction to overthrow the peaceful Abnegation leadership.
