Where To Watch A Sign of Affection — Season 1

A Sign of Affection Season 1 follows Yuki Itose, a kind and somewhat shy university student who has been Deaf since birth. Yuki communicates primarily through Japanese Sign Language, text, and other visual forms of communication. Her everyday world begins to change after a chance encounter on a train with Itsuomi Nagi, an older university student and passionate traveler. Itsuomi is multilingual and has traveled to different countries, but sign language is completely unfamiliar to him. Instead of treating Yuki's deafness as something that defines her, he becomes genuinely curious about her world and gradually begins learning how to communicate with her. For Yuki, who has always experienced the world differently from hearing people around her, Itsuomi represents a new connection and a doorway into experiences she has dreamed about.

More details about A Sign of Affection — Season 1 and where you can watch

A Sign of Affection stands out for making Japanese Sign Language an important part of its romance and storytelling. The creators researched Deaf culture and consulted people familiar with Japanese Sign Language to make Yuki’s communication more authentic. One interesting challenge was drawing both hand signs and facial expressions clearly at the same time. The story also contrasts Yuki’s visual way of communicating with Itsuomi’s love of spoken languages and international travel, making their relationship unique. The anime is based on the manga by suu Morishita, which began in 2019 before receiving its 12-episode anime adaptation in 2024.
