Home Run Derby Season 1 brings together an extraordinary collection of baseball legends in a simple but exciting format: two powerful hitters face each other in a nine-inning home-run competition. The opening matchup features Mickey Mantle vs. Willie Mays, immediately establishing the show's star power. Other legendary players include Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Harmon Killebrew, Jackie Jensen, Frank Robinson, Duke Snider, Eddie Mathews, Al Kaline, Gil Hodges and Rocky Colavito. Unlike modern Home Run Derby competitions, the original series was essentially a head-to-head baseball duel. A batter had to swing at pitches in the strike zone, and a non-home-run result counted as an out. The winner advanced to face another challenger, creating a continuing champion-versus-challenger storyline throughout the season.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the series is its incredible lineup. The show didn’t feature fictional characters—the “cast” consisted largely of actual Major League Baseball superstars competing as themselves. Hank Aaron won six of his seven contests, earning $13,500, while Mickey Mantle hit the most total home runs during the series with 44.

The first episode was particularly historic: Mickey Mantle defeated Willie Mays 9–8. The finale returned to Mantle, who defeated Jackie Jensen 13–10 on July 2, 1960.

The original prize was $2,000 for a standard victory, with additional money available under certain circumstances. One especially unusual rule was that consecutive home runs could increase the prize money, making streaks financially valuable as well as impressive.
