Season 1 follows Miep Gies (Bel Powley), an outspoken and independent young woman working for Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber) in Amsterdam. When the Nazi occupation makes life increasingly dangerous for Jewish families, Otto asks Miep to help hide his family in the secret annex above his business. Miep agrees without hesitation, but protecting the Franks becomes far more complicated than simply keeping a secret. Alongside her husband Jan Gies (Joe Cole), she must obtain food, ration coupons and other necessities while avoiding Nazi authorities and dealing with the growing danger around them. The series also brings the Frank family into focus, including Anne Frank (Billie Boullet), Edith Frank (Amira Casar) and Margot Frank (Ashley Brooke). Other people hiding in the annex include Hermann van Pels, Auguste van Pels, Peter van Pels and Dr. Fritz Pfeffer.
