One of the movie’s biggest creative ideas is that the actors play exaggerated fictional versions of themselves. James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson essentially turn their public personas into comedy characters. The movie mixes Hollywood celebrity culture with an apocalyptic fantasy, while deliberately making the characters selfish, ridiculous and sometimes completely unreliable.
The film also became notable for its unusually large collection of celebrity cameos. Emma Watson, Rihanna, Michael Cera, Paul Rudd, Channing Tatum, Kevin Hart and others appear in memorable roles or cameo appearances, making the movie partly a parody of celebrity culture itself.

The project developed from a short film called “Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse,” which helped establish the basic concept of Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel facing the end of the world. The feature expanded that premise into a much larger ensemble comedy.
