Jim Carrey spent nearly eight hours every day getting transformed into the Grinch with heavy green makeup, prosthetics, and contact lenses. The process was so painful and uncomfortable that Carrey reportedly compared it to “being buried alive.” A CIA torture-resistance expert was even hired to help him mentally handle the long makeup sessions.
The Whoville sets were inspired by the original Dr. Seuss illustrations, which is why almost every building looks curved, twisted, and cartoon-like. Thousands of tiny props were specially created to make the world feel like a live-action storybook.
The movie also won the Academy Award for Best Makeup because of its incredible transformation work. Jim Carrey performed many scenes while wearing extremely hot costumes under studio lights, making the role physically exhausting.
Taylor Momsen, who played Cindy Lou Who, later became famous as the lead singer of the rock band The Pretty Reckless. Many fans do not realize the sweet little girl from the movie later became a rock star.
