One of the most interesting aspects of The Darkest Minds is that it was adapted from Alexandra Bracken’s young-adult novel, rather than being an original screenplay. Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson was making her live-action directorial debut after becoming widely known for directing the animated Kung Fu Panda 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3. The film also brought together a young ensemble led by Amandla Stenberg, while established performers such as Mandy Moore, Bradley Whitford and Gwendoline Christie played important adult roles.

Alexandra Bracken’s original story is part of The Darkest Minds book series, which continues Ruby’s story beyond the events covered in the film. The movie therefore leaves several elements of the fictional world and its characters less developed than they are in the books.
