The Darkest Minds takes place in a frightening future where a mysterious disease kills 98% of America's children. The teenagers who survive begin developing extraordinary abilities, causing the government to imprison them in special camps. One of the most interesting aspects of The Darkest Minds is that it was adapted from Alexandra Bracken’s young-adult novel, rather than being an original screenplay. Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson was making her live-action directorial debut after becoming widely known for directing the animated Kung Fu Panda 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3.
