One of the most fascinating things about the film is that Sweeney Todd didn’t originate with Tim Burton or even Stephen Sondheim. The character first appeared in the Victorian-era penny dreadful The String of Pearls, serialized in 1846–47. The original story already featured Todd as a murderous barber and Mrs. Lovett as the person who used the victims in meat pies. However, the modern revenge story involving Benjamin Barker, Judge Turpin, Lucy and Johanna came much later through Christopher Bond’s 1973 play and Sondheim’s 1979 musical.

The film also received significant recognition: it won two Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor for Johnny Depp. At the Oscars, it received three nominations and won for Best Art Direction.
