In Season 4, Lt. Jim Dangle and his gang of dysfunctional cops face perhaps their wildest run of mis-adventures: a deputy’s unexpected pregnancy (or is it?), undercover stings gone off the rails, drunken jet-ski rides, corrupt sponsorship deals, and botched investigations. While one episode has the department riding jet skis, another sees the squad being “mounted cops,” and yet another involves a shady election-tampering plot. Through all the chaos misguided arrests, ridiculous stings, bad judgment the season lampoons law-enforcement tropes and satirises bureaucracy, prejudice and incompetence. As always, behind the slapstick lies a biting mockery of authority and societal absurdities.

In Season 4 of RENO 911!, one of the most bizarre episodes involves the department getting a corporate sponsor yes, the police force becomes “sponsored.” That means instead of serving the public impartially, the deputies start acting more like a commercial-backed performance troupe: taking sponsorship money, being influenced by brand interests, and behaving more like ad-executives than law-enforcement. For a show that’s already absurd, this twist feels uncomfortably close to a satire of corporatisation of public service and many viewers were shocked how far the mockery of policing and commercialization went in a comedy show.
