Where To Watch Ponyo (2008)

Ponyo follows Sosuke, a curious five-year-old boy who lives with his mother, Lisa, in a house overlooking the sea. One day, he discovers a small goldfish trapped in a glass jar and rescues her, naming her Ponyo. What Sosuke doesn't know is that Ponyo is actually the daughter of Fujimoto, a powerful underwater sorcerer, and Granmamare, a mysterious sea goddess. Ponyo quickly becomes fascinated by the human world and develops a powerful desire to become human so she can stay with Sosuke. Her transformation, however, unleashes magical forces that disturb the balance between the ocean and the human world. As enormous waves surround Sosuke's coastal village, the two children embark on an unusual adventure involving magic, the sea, family, friendship and unconditional love.

More details about Ponyo (2008) and where you can watch

Ponyo was inspired partly by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, but Hayao Miyazaki gave the story a distinctly Japanese fantasy style. Ponyo’s original name is Brunhilde, inspired by Norse mythology. The film is famous for its hand-drawn animation and detailed depiction of the ocean. Interestingly, the opening 12 seconds reportedly required 1,613 pages of conceptual sketches. The story also includes prehistoric-looking sea creatures and explores themes of childhood, family, nature, and the relationship between humans and the ocean. Ponyo’s love for ham became one of the movie’s most memorable fun details.

Did You Know

Ponyo isn’t simply a retelling of The Little Mermaid. Hayao Miyazaki created a much more unusual mixture of fairy tale, Japanese folklore, ocean mythology and childhood imagination. Ponyo’s father, Fujimoto, fears the human world’s effect on the ocean, while Ponyo is fascinated by human life.
