Season 9 was intentionally created as the show’s farewell season after FOX announced that the series would conclude following its ninth installment. Unlike the unexpected cancellation after Season 6, the writers had the opportunity to plan a proper ending, allowing every major character to receive a meaningful conclusion.
The season used several time jumps to show the Baxter family at different stages of life, including the arrival of new grandchildren and changing family dynamics. The emotional series finale, “Keep on Truckin'”, centered around Mike’s beloved truck, using it as a symbol of family memories and the passage of time. The episode became one of the most memorable finales in the sitcom’s history.

Many fans don’t realize that FOX renewed Last Man Standing for one final season specifically so the writers could give the Baxter family a proper goodbye. After the surprise cancellation by ABC in 2017 and the successful revival on FOX, the cast and producers agreed that ending with a planned farewell would be more satisfying than another abrupt cancellation.
