I Am Legend is based on I Am Legend, the classic 1954 novel by Richard Matheson, one of the most influential horror and science-fiction writers of the 20th century. The story has inspired several film adaptations, including The Last Man on Earth (1964) and The Omega Man (1971), but the 2007 version became the most commercially successful. Much of the abandoned New York City was created using a combination of real locations, extensive visual effects, and large-scale practical sets. Will Smith carried much of the film alone, making it one of his most demanding performances. The movie also features an alternate ending released on home media that is much closer to the novel’s original message about who the “real monster” is.

One of the film’s biggest production challenges was making New York City appear completely deserted. Several iconic streets and landmarks were temporarily closed for filming—an extremely rare and expensive achievement. Another little-known detail is that the theatrical ending differs significantly from the alternate ending, which aligns more closely with Richard Matheson’s original novel and completely changes the meaning of the title “I Am Legend.”
