Groundhog Day follows Phil Connors (Bill Murray), a cynical and self-centered television weatherman who travels to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, with producer Rita Hanson (Andie MacDowell) and cameraman Larry (Chris Elliott) to cover the annual Groundhog Day celebration. After an unexpected snowstorm, Phil discovers that he is trapped in a mysterious time loop: every morning he wakes up to February 2, with the same radio broadcast, the same people, and the same events repeating. As the repetitions continue, however, he begins confronting the consequences of his behavior and gradually changes the way he treats Rita and the people around him.

One of the most interesting production facts is that although the story takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, much of the movie was actually filmed in Woodstock, Illinois. Woodstock’s historic square became the fictional Punxsutawney seen throughout the film. The city continues to commemorate its connection with the movie.

Bill Murray was actually bitten by the groundhog twice during filming. According to IMDb’s production trivia, he received rabies vaccinations afterward. Director Harold Ramis joked that the animal behaved as long as it was being fed bananas.

Harold Ramis reportedly originally considered Tom Hanks for the lead role before deciding that Hanks’ screen persona was not the direction he wanted for Phil Connors.
