Season 5 was originally planned to be much longer, but FOX announced it as the show’s final season and reduced the episode count to just 12 episodes. As a result, the writers condensed several storylines while still attempting to complete the origins of Batman, Commissioner Gordon, Catwoman, Penguin, and Riddler. Despite the shorter run, the season successfully adapted elements from the legendary Batman comic events No Man’s Land and Zero Year, giving fans a rare live-action version of Gotham City completely isolated from the outside world.

One little-known detail is that the series finale takes place ten years after the main events of Season 5. The final episode was designed to show Gotham’s future and includes the first full reveal of Batman in the show’s universe. To make the time jump feel more authentic, several characters were given comic-inspired appearances that closely resemble their classic comic book counterparts, including Penguin and Riddler.
