Set in the fictional nation of Amestris, Fullmetal Alchemist follows two gifted brothers, Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric, whose lives change forever after attempting the forbidden act of human transmutation to bring their deceased mother back to life. The experiment fails catastrophically—Edward loses his left leg, while Alphonse loses his entire body. Unlike the manga, the 2003 anime gradually branches into its own original storyline, delivering darker themes, philosophical questions about sacrifice and morality, and an emotional ending that has remained one of anime's most memorable conclusions.
