Election premiered in April 1999, directed by Alexander Payne with a screenplay by Payne and Jim Taylor, based on Tom Perrotta’s novel. The film stars Matthew Broderick as Jim McAllister, a high school teacher who becomes obsessed with stopping star pupil Tracy Flick (played by Reese Witherspoon) from winning the student government election. McAllister recruits a popular but naïve football player, Paul Metzler, to run against her, which ignites rivalry, sabotage, and escalating personal conflicts. What appears as a simple school election becomes a satire of human ambition, political maneuvering, and ethical compromise, with clever writing and sharp character arcs. Though not a big commercial success at the box office, Election earned critical acclaim, awards, and nominations and remains a cult classic for its social commentary.

The Criterion Collection released Election on Blu-ray with a restored 4K version and included the movie’s original alternate ending even though it was never shown in theaters! That alternate ending, found years later, resolves the story very differently and changes the tone of the characters’ arcs entirely.
