Eastbound & Down Season 1 is notable for introducing Kenny Powers, one of television comedy’s most outrageous antiheroes. Kenny is a former professional baseball pitcher who refuses to accept that his career has collapsed. His exaggerated confidence, inappropriate behavior and obsession with his former fame create much of the show’s humor, while the story also gives viewers glimpses of his insecurity and loneliness.
Season 1 contains only 6 episodes, making it a short but tightly focused introduction to Kenny’s world. Instead of stretching the story across a large number of episodes, the season follows Kenny’s return to North Carolina and his increasingly desperate attempts to rebuild his reputation. His temporary job as a physical education teacher creates an amusing contrast between the glamorous life he remembers and the ordinary life he is forced to live.
