Directed by Mike Flanagan, Hush (2016) follows Maddie Young, a successful author who chose solitude after losing her hearing and speech from illness. Living off the grid, she enjoys peace until a masked killer shows up outside her home. After brutally killing her neighbor, the intruder realizes Maddie cannot hear and begins tormenting her, stealing her phone and cutting off her escape routes. Trapped inside with no way to call for help, Maddie uses her wits and resourcefulness to fight for survival in silence. The film’s focus on sensory deprivation especially hearing loss heightens fear, forcing audiences to experience the terror as Maddie does. Hush blends psychological horror with physical danger to deliver a uniquely suspenseful experience.
