One of the most interesting aspects of Se7en is how deeply its story is structured around the Seven Deadly Sins. Instead of simply mentioning the sins, John Doe creates elaborate crime scenes intended to physically represent each one. The movie also became an important early example of David Fincher’s signature dark, industrial visual style. Interestingly, screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker had previously worked in New York and drew inspiration from his experiences in the city’s grim atmosphere when developing the screenplay.
The film’s visual identity was also heavily influenced by its deliberately dirty and oppressive environment. Rather than presenting a glamorous version of an unnamed American city, Fincher created a world that constantly feels wet, crowded, decaying and uncomfortable. The production’s police headquarters scenes, for example, were filmed at the Pacific Electric Building in Los Angeles.

The idea behind Se7en isn’t simply about a serial killer murdering people. John Doe views himself as an artist and believes his murders are a kind of twisted moral lesson.
