Black Hawk Down was inspired by the Battle of Mogadishu, which took place in Somalia on October 3–4, 1993. The movie was adapted from Mark Bowden’s nonfiction book Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, published in 1999. Ridley Scott assembled an unusually large ensemble cast, with several actors playing real soldiers involved in the battle. The movie was filmed largely in Morocco, including locations around Kénitra Air Base.
One particularly interesting production detail is that the helicopter crash sequence combined real helicopter flying with CGI augmentation; IMDb notes that the Black Hawk’s spiral descent was achieved largely through skilled helicopter flying, while CGI was used for elements including the rotors after impact.

The movie opens with a quotation attributed to Plato, before moving into its depiction of Somalia in 1992. The film is based on Mark Bowden’s nonfiction account, but it compresses and rearranges some events and characters for dramatic storytelling.
