One fascinating aspect of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is that the movie was considerably different from Roald Dahl’s original novel. Dahl wrote the screenplay and received the screenwriting credit, but David Seltzer later performed an uncredited rewrite. Several elements were changed during production, including giving Willy Wonka a much larger role, turning Arthur Slugworth into a more significant mysterious figure, and adding the Fizzy Lifting Drinks sequence.

The movie was also filmed primarily around Munich, Germany, between August and November 1970. The town of Nördlingen, Bavaria, was used for the exterior town scenes near the end of the movie.

Another memorable production detail involves Gene Wilder’s first appearance as Wonka. Wilder specifically wanted Wonka to walk with a limp before suddenly performing a somersault. His reasoning was that this would immediately make the audience uncertain about whether Wonka was telling the truth or manipulating them. Director Mel Stuart agreed to the idea.
