Cruel Summer Season 2 is a new mystery-thriller story set in the Pacific Northwest around the turn of the millennium. Unlike Season 1, which centered on Jeanette Turner and Kate Wallis, the second season introduces a new group of characters and follows an intense teenage friendship that gradually becomes entangled in secrets, romance, betrayal and a shocking mystery. The story focuses on Megan Landry, a gifted young computer enthusiast living in the waterfront town of Chatham, and Isabella LaRue, an outgoing and mysterious foreign exchange student who arrives in Megan's life during the summer of 1999. Isabella quickly becomes an important part of Megan's world, while Megan's best friend Luke Chambers becomes caught between the two girls.

One of the biggest differences between the two seasons is the anthology format. Season 2 does not continue the central Jeanette Turner/Kate Wallis mystery from Season 1. Instead, it introduces Megan Landry, Isabella LaRue and Luke Chambers and creates a completely new mystery.

The season is structured around three timelines surrounding Y2K, allowing viewers to experience the characters’ relationships before, during and after the events that transform their lives.

The setting also changes dramatically. Season 1 was set in the fictional Texas town of Skylin, while Season 2 moves the story to a Pacific Northwest waterfront community, giving the second season a different visual and atmospheric identity.
