Set during the summer of 1962, The Sandlot follows Scotty Smalls, a shy fifth-grader who moves to a new neighborhood and struggles to fit in. His life changes when baseball-loving neighborhood kid Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez welcomes him into a group of boys who spend their summer playing baseball on a local sandlot. Scotty initially knows almost nothing about baseball, but Benny and the other boys teach him the game while introducing him to the friendships, rivalries, jokes, adventures, and embarrassing moments that define their summer. One of the most interesting aspects of The Sandlot is that its story was inspired by director and co-writer David Mickey Evans’ childhood experiences. Evans recalled an incident involving his younger brother, a baseball, and a frightening dog. He later transformed that real-life memory into the movie’s much more playful story about the boys, the baseball, and “The Beast.” Evans has explained that the movie was not a literal recreation of his childhood; instead, it represented the childhood he wished he had experienced.

The film is set in California’s San Fernando Valley in 1962, but much of the actual filming took place in Utah, including locations around Salt Lake City.
