Wicked is a major film adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical, but the story itself goes back even further. The musical was inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which reimagined the characters from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The 2024 movie then adapted the stage musical rather than directly adapting Maguire’s novel.

The movie was deliberately made as the first half of a two-part cinematic adaptation. Instead of compressing the entire stage musical into one film, the filmmakers expanded the material into two movies, allowing the characters, relationships and world of Oz more room to develop. The second film, Wicked: For Good, followed in 2025.

One of the film’s most distinctive elements is the contrast between Elphaba’s green appearance and Glinda’s traditionally glamorous image. Their visual differences reflect an important theme of the story: how society can decide who is considered attractive, popular, strange, good or wicked based on appearances and social status.
