One of the most famous sequences is Ethan Hunt’s infiltration of the CIA vault. Tom Cruise actually performed the difficult suspended stunt and reportedly struggled to keep his body perfectly level. During filming, he repeatedly hit his head on the floor, so he put coins in his shoes as counterweights to help maintain his balance.

The film is unusual within the franchise because Ethan Hunt does not fire a gun, and it is the only Mission: Impossible movie without a traditional shoot-out or gunfight. Its tension comes primarily from espionage, deception and carefully constructed suspense sequences.

The disappearing-and-reappearing CD trick used by Ethan is another surprisingly low-tech detail. According to IMDb’s production trivia, it was performed as an actual sleight-of-hand trick rather than being created entirely through a visual effect.
