How to Train Your Dragon (2025) is a live-action adaptation of DreamWorks’ beloved animated film, but it was directed by Dean DeBlois, the same filmmaker who directed the original animated trilogy. This gave the remake a direct creative connection to the earlier films. Gerard Butler also returned to the franchise, this time portraying Stoick the Vast in live action after originally voicing the character in the animated movies.
The film is based on the world created by Cressida Cowell, whose original How to Train Your Dragon book series contains 12 novels. However, the books are quite different from the DreamWorks movies. For example, the book version of Toothless is much smaller and has a noticeably different appearance, while the movie’s Toothless became one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters.
