Lee Ermey), Joker and fellow recruit Leonard "Gomer Pyle" Lawrence (Vincent D'Onofrio) experience a training system designed to strip away individuality and create soldiers. One of the most interesting aspects of Full Metal Jacket is how authentic its military atmosphere feels. R. Lee Ermey, who plays Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, was not simply an actor portraying a drill instructor—he had actually served as a U.S. Marine drill instructor. His military experience helped shape Hartman’s intimidating performance.

Kubrick also filmed the Vietnam sequences largely in England, transforming locations around London into war-torn Vietnam. The movie’s striking visual contrast between the controlled geometry of boot camp and the ruined urban landscape of Hue became one of its defining characteristics.
