Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Season 1 takes viewers back to Swallow Falls before the infamous food storm of the movies. Young inventor Flint Lockwood is still a high-school student, constantly creating bizarre inventions that have a habit of causing spectacular trouble. His world changes when he becomes friends with aspiring reporter Sam Sparks, whose curiosity and scientific knowledge make her the perfect partner for Flint's chaotic experiments. Together, Flint and Sam encounter everything from malfunctioning garbage robots and genetically modified food to time machines, clones, unusual animals and strange weather experiments. Tim Lockwood, Flint's sardine-loving father, Baby Brent, Earl Devereaux, Mayor Shelbourne, Steve the monkey, Manny, and Gil add to the show's eccentric ensemble. Rather than retelling the movies, Season 1 builds a lighter high-school adventure around the characters and explains their lives before the giant food disasters.

One of the most interesting aspects of the series is that it deliberately works as a prequel. Instead of immediately showing the famous food-raining disaster, the story focuses on Flint and Sam as teenagers and explores how their friendship developed. The series was developed by Mark Evestaff and Alex Galatis and produced in association with Sony Pictures Animation and Corus Entertainment.

The show also turns many familiar characters into younger or differently portrayed versions of the people audiences know from the films. Season 1 includes episodes involving science fairs, cloning, robots, time travel, Frankenstein-style experiments, meteors and bizarre inventions, giving Flint plenty of opportunities to create problems with his scientific imagination
