Season 2 is widely considered the point where Gotham fully embraced its comic-book roots. Instead of focusing mainly on police investigations, the show introduced larger-than-life villains, secret conspiracies, and the bizarre experiments of Indian Hill. The season also gave fans the first live-action television versions of characters like Hugo Strange and Mr. Freeze. Many viewers felt that the show’s darker tone, faster pacing, and stronger focus on villain origin stories made it a major improvement over Season 1.

One of the biggest surprises of Season 2 is that Jerome Valeska was never officially called “The Joker.” Due to rights restrictions involving Batman films, the writers could only hint at the iconic villain. Despite this limitation, Jerome’s laugh, mannerisms, and chaotic personality were intentionally designed to evoke the Joker, making him one of the most talked-about characters in the entire series.
